Good Morning! I'm your host Lonnie Wibberding, and you are listening to Umpqua Connect. A daily devotional podcast sent out from the beautiful Umpqua Valley of Southern Oregon.

Today is Monday, February 1, 2021.

My friend Kathy suggested the verse for today. As I began to dig into it, I realized how much is going on here. Too much for a short devotional today, but we will try to scratch the surface.

It is an invitation from Jesus to all who are weary and burdened to come and find rest. But He invites us to rest, by putting on a piece of equipment that is used to work.

Matthew 11:28-30 is Jesus talking. It says:

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

The yoke is a piece of equipment that goes around the neck of two oxen to help them pull a load or plough together. It keeps them going in the same direction.

There is something about working along side of Jesus, attached to Him, that gives us rest.

Jesus says, "Take my yoke on you. Learn from me. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Could it be the things that wear us out are the things Jesus never asked us to carry?  The things we need rest from are things we shouldn't be carrying anyway.

But when we come to Jesus. Let go of our stuff. And come along side of Him, and learn from Him, the burden becomes lighter.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Thanks for connecting.

May God Bless your day. We'll talk again tomorrow
