Good Morning! I'm your host Lonnie Wibberding, and you are listening to Umpqua Connect. A daily devotional podcast sent out from the beautiful Umpqua Valley of Southern Oregon.

Today is Friday, October 9, 2020

The Book of Isaiah is written to the people of Israel during the Babylonian captivity. God's people have been taken away to another nation, Babylon, because they have turned away from God. Now God, through the prophet Isaiah, is appealing to them to turn back to Him.

Isaiah 43:10-13 says:

10 “You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord,
“and my servant whom I have chosen,
so that you may know and believe me
and understand that I am he.
Before me no god was formed,
nor will there be one after me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord,
and apart from me there is no savior.
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god among you.
You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “that I am God.
13     Yes, and from ancient days I am he.
No one can deliver out of my hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?”

Here God is claiming absolute power. There is no appeals court to take God to. There is no other God that has existed before, and there is no other god who will ever exist. God is it. Nobody can stop what He wants to do. No one can question it.

So let me ask you, "Is that good news or bad news?"

Well, that depends. If God's not very nice, that's really bad news. Because there is no one to stop the evil.

But --  if God is good, then that's really good news.

And it turns out, the one who holds absolute power holds absolute goodness.

That's really good for us. It gives us hope that after God has allowed bad for awhile to let us all see what sin actually does, He's going to clean it all up. Make everything new again.

And He has the power to do it.

Thanks for connecting.

May God Bless your day. We'll talk again tomorrow
