Good Morning! I'm your host Lonnie Wibberding, and you are listening to Umpqua Connect. A daily devotional podcast sent out from the beautiful Umpqua Valley of Southern Oregon.

Today is Thursday, June 25, 2020

If you have lived very long on this earth you will have enemies. Most of us don't go out seeking enemies, but they develop nonetheless. Perhaps it is a misunderstanding they just can't see past. Or you had to stand up for something and it made someone feel condemned. Or they took the other side of a relationship that went bad. Whatever the reason, even those of us who want to live in peace with everyone have enemies.

So today Solomon covers how to deal with them. It's not a natural response. But it is pretty good, and sneaky advice.

Proverbs 25:21,22 says:

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
    if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
    and the Lord will reward you.

Here we have an interesting situation. You're enemy is in need. He is hungry, or he is thirsty. Rather than letting him stay hungry or thirty, you give him what he needs. At first this seems like the "turn the other cheek" advice Jesus gives later. But it's not exactly. Solomon says this will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.

He or she has harbored all these hard feelings towards you, and now your enemy is in need and you supply it. One of two things are going to happen. They will see you are a nice person after all and cease to be your enemy. That's a good result. Now you have less enemies to deal with.

But if they continue to be your enemy, it's going burn under their collar that you helped them. And if they are going to continue to be a jerk like that, well that's pretty cool too.

Either way, you've done the right thing. If it makes them your friend -- great. If they continue to oppose you, it will bother them. Either way you win. Who says doing the right thing can't be fun.

If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat;
    if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
22 In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head,
    and the Lord will reward you.

Thanks for connecting.

May God Bless your day. We'll talk again tomorrow
