Good Morning! I'm your host Lonnie Wibberding, and you are listening to Umpqua Connect. A daily devotional podcast sent out from the beautiful Umpqua Valley of Southern Oregon.

Today is Sunday, June 21, 2020

I want to say Happy Father's Day to my dad. Dad, thank you for your example of integrity and hard work. And if you are a father, or have contributed significantly to a child's life, thank you. It is self-sacrificing people like you who make this world a better place.

When Solomon wrote the Proverb for today, I wonder if he was thinking of his father? There is some interesting history that crops up. I don't know for sure if he was thinking of his dad, but see what you think.

Solomon lived in Jerusalem, the city where the king ruled Israel from. His father, King David had captured it from the Jebusites who thought no one could take their city. In 2 Samuel 5 they taunt King David and tell him, there's no way you're getting in here. If this city was defended by the blind and the lame, you couldn't get in here.

But David and his army conquer the city. But they don't conquer it through the walls as the Jebusites expect. They go through an access up a water supply route by the spring of Gihon.

It's an interesting natural feature, the spring of Gihon will surge one to three times a day, depending on the time of year. Then it will stop. This is because of a geographic feature that forms a siphon. It was at this spring David sent men into the city to conquer it.

Pretty smart.

Fast forward to the end of David's life. He has promised Solomon will be king, but another son is trying to usurp the throne. David sets up a hasty coronation to declare Solomon king.

Where? At the spring of Gihon, the exact place he had captured the city of Jerusalem.

I just wonder, if Solomon was thinking of his dad when he penned these words from Proverbs 21:22. It says:

One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty
and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.

Again Solomon reminds us wisdom is better than strength. It's worth taking the time to go after wisdom.

On this Father's Day I like to think Solomon penned these words down at the Gihon Spring. Where he was coronated king. And where his dad many years ago used his wisdom to go against a mighty city to couquer it.

One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty
and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.

Happy Father's Day and Thanks for connecting.

May God Bless your day. We'll talk again tomorrow
